The original PSPs with firmware version 1.00 could execute unsigned code, or what most people call "homebrew" software. Homebrew could also be run on 1.50 PSPs via an exploit. There are a ton of homebrew games and applications out there.
Anyone who wants to add to this definition feel free, there's plenty more to homebrew than just this explaination. |

| You have to have a PSP with FW version 2.6 or lower to run Homebrews. In the case of 2.01+ FW you have to own the game GTA:LCS because of the game save exploit they use inorder to run the homebrew. If you have 1.5 or 1.0 FW then they have a direct loader they use to run the homebrew games. If you have 2.0 you can use a downgrader to bring your PSP back to 1.0 and 1.5. |

Basically, another good explanation of what a homebrew game is, is the fact that is a game that could have been coded by you or me. Furthermore, if you do having coding abilities, but do not have the hundreds of dollars for the available official SDK's (such as the PS2 one), you can always do a search for homebrew applications.
If you are indeed interested about homebrew developping, I would also suggets taking a look at the GBA scene, as some books were written on the subject, but were pulled off at the last minute due to legal issues. |
